Inquiry into short-term learning on Japanese rural islands: a qualitative study.

Background: Community-based medical education (CBME) improves the learning of medical students. The outcomes depend on the circumstances in which students learn. So far, there has been no study on the short-term learning experienced by medical students on rural islands in Japan; hence, we specifically explored this in the case of islands in Okinawa.

Colonoscopic findings and pathologic characteristics of Strongyloides colitis: a case series.

Background/aims: Strongyloidiasis, which is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, is one of the prevalent infections in the tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The larvae mainly infect the small intestine and cause serious disseminated strongyloidiasis. Although upper gastrointestinal features in strongyloidiasis are well known, colonoscopic evaluation has not been established yet.

Whipple's disease: the first Japanese case diagnosed by electron microscopy and polymerase chain reaction.

A 52-year-old man presented with diarrhea and 20 kg weight loss in one year. Enteroscopy showed diffuse yellow-white shaggy mucosa in the duodenum and jejunum. Biopsies of the duodenal mucosa revealed massive infiltration within the lamina propria by foamy macrophages strongly positive for periodic acid-Schiff stain.
