Purpose: This study investigates the care provision and the role of infectious disease (ID) specialists during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.

Methods: A survey was conducted at German study sites participating in the Lean European Open Survey on SARS-CoV-2 infected patients (LEOSS). Hospitals certified by the German Society of Infectious diseases (DGI) were identified as ID centers.

Signatures of self-organized criticality (SOC) have recently been observed in an ultracold atomic gas under continuous laser excitation to strongly interacting Rydberg states [S. Helmrich et al., Nature, 577, 481-486 (2020)].

Purpose: The effectiveness of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents is usually lower in real world settings compared with randomized clinical trials (RCTs), often limiting the use of real-world evidence (RWE) in regulatory and healthcare decisions. The current analysis aimed to develop and validate an algorithm to explain the difference in outcomes between RWE studies and RCTs in patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

Methods: The algorithm was developed using ranibizumab real world data (RWD) from the US and validated on Australian and UK RWD.

Whether it be physical, biological or social processes, complex systems exhibit dynamics that are exceedingly difficult to understand or predict from underlying principles. Here we report a striking correspondence between the excitation dynamics of a laser driven gas of Rydberg atoms and the spreading of diseases, which in turn opens up a controllable platform for studying non-equilibrium dynamics on complex networks. The competition between facilitated excitation and spontaneous decay results in sub-exponential growth of the excitation number, which is empirically observed in real epidemics.
