Stage-specific embryonic antigen-4 (SSEA-4) is a developmentally regulated antigen, while expression level of SSEA-4 and / or its synthase ST3GAL2 is associated with prognosis in various malignancies. We have reported a prominent increase of SSEA-4 in castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) and its negative correlation with the androgen receptor (AR). Meanwhile, loss of AR has increased to approximately 30% with the growing use of androgen receptor signaling inhibitor for metastatic CRPC (mCRPC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how bariatric/metabolic surgery affects the incidence and severity of COVID-19 among patients in Japan, amidst ongoing debates about its protective benefits.
  • Data were collected from 83 institutions, revealing that while there were no severe cases or deaths among 119 patients studied, moderate COVID-19 cases were notably more prevalent in these bariatric patients than in the general population.
  • The findings suggest that bariatric/metabolic surgery does not reduce the risk of COVID-19 complications, as moderate cases were linked to specific risk factors such as dyslipidemia and prior infection.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how vitamin D levels after bariatric surgery affect skeletal muscle health, focusing on 83 patients who underwent sleeve gastrectomy.
  • Patients were divided into two groups: one receiving vitamin D supplementation and dietary guidance, while the other did not receive guidance, allowing for comparison.
  • Results showed that those who received supplementation had significantly higher vitamin D levels post-surgery, which correlated with better preservation of lower limb muscle mass, suggesting supplementation may help prevent muscle loss.
