Diabetes is associated with the dysfunction of glucagon-producing pancreatic islet α-cells, although the underlying mechanisms regulating glucagon secretion and α-cell dysfunction remain unclear. While insulin secretion from pancreatic β-cells has long been known to be partly controlled by intracellular phospholipid signaling, very little is known about the role of phospholipids in glucagon secretion. Here we show that TMEM55A, a lipid phosphatase that dephosphorylates phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) to phosphatidylinositol-5-phosphate (PI5P), regulates α-cell exocytosis and glucagon secretion.

Background: Type 1 diabetes is a serious, chronic disorder with an increasing incidence among children and adolescents. Glycemic control in individuals with type 1 diabetes is better managed through a basal-bolus regimen with either regular human or rapid-acting insulin analogues administered as a bolus at mealtimes. Rapid-acting insulin analogues have been hypothesized to cause optimal glycemic control and less risk of hypoglycemic episodes compared to regular human insulins.

The biochemical analysis of animal venoms has been intensifying over the years, enabling the prediction of new molecules derived from toxins, harnessing the therapeutic potential of these molecules. From the venom of the fish , using methods for predicting antimicrobial and cell-penetrating peptides, two peptides from Natterins with promising characteristics were synthesized and subjected to and analysis. The peptides were subjected to stability tests and antimicrobial assays, cytotoxicity in murine fibroblast cells, antiviral assays against the Chikungunya virus, and the toxicity on was also evaluated.

This review provides a critical assessment of the most recent advances in digital imaging (DI) methods, applied for the development of analytical methodologies combining quantum dots (QDs). The state-of-the-art, treatment of data, instrumental considerations, software, sensing approaches, and optimization of the resulting methods are reported. Applications of the technology for the analysis of food and beverages, biomedically relevant analytes, drugs, environmental samples and forensic samples are also discussed.

This study aimed to assess the association between community and consumer food environment (FE) measures and anaemia, overweight and abdominal obesity in mother-child dyads living in situations of social vulnerability. A cross-sectional study was carried out in 40 favelas in a capital city in the northeast of Brazil. The sample consisted of 1882 women and 665 children aged under 5 years.
