Antithrombotic therapy and pregnancy: consensus report and recommendations for prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Venous thromboembolism and adverse pregnancy outcomes are potential complications of pregnancy. Numerous studies have evaluated both the risk factors for and the prevention and management of these outcomes in pregnant patients. This consensus group was convened to provide concise recommendations, based on the currently available literature, regarding the use of antithrombotic therapy in pregnant patients at risk for venous thromboembolic events and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Community-based treatment of venous thromboembolism with a low-molecular-weight heparin and warfarin.

This multicenter, prospective, open label, observational study evaluated practice patterns of physicians using tinzaparin, a low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH), and warfarin for the treatment of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) with or without pulmonary embolism (PE). Short-term recurrence of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and safety were also evaluated. Patients with an objective diagnosis of DVT, with or without PE, were invited by their physician to participate in this study.

Compliance with antithrombotic guidelines.

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) remains a significant threat to public health despite the availability of effective and safe prophylactic measures and treatments. Guidelines based on randomized clinical trials are available to improve the management of thromboembolic disease. However, gaps exist between recommendations and clinical practice, and many patients are unnecessarily exposed to the risk of a deep vein thrombosis or potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.

Treatment of venous thromboembolism: adherence to guidelines and impact of physician knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs.

Objectives: To assess the treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in hospitalized patients enrolled in a national, multicenter database.

Methods: This was a retrospective, cohort study that randomly selected VTE patients from 38 academic/teaching, community, and Veterans Administration (VA) hospitals. The study included a physician survey component.
