A series of 6-styryl-1,2-oxathiine 2,2-dioxides have been efficiently obtained by a two-step protocol from readily available (1E,4E)-1-(dimethylamino)-5-arylpenta-1,4-dien-3-ones involving a regioselective sulfene addition and subsequent Cope elimination. Pd-Mediated direct C-H bond functionalisation of the 6-styryl-1,2-oxathiine 2,2-dioxides and a wider selection of 5,6-diaryl substituted 1,2-oxathiine 2,2-dioxides proceeded smoothly to afford C-3 (hetero)aryl substituted analogues and the results are contrasted with those of a complementary bromination - Suzuki cross-coupling sequence. Whilst the cycloaddition of benzyne, derived from in situ fluoride initiated decomposition of 2-(trimethylsilyl)phenyl trifluoromethanesulfonate, to the substituted 1,2-oxathiine 2,2-dioxides resulted in low yields of substituted naphthalenes, the addition of 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione to the 6-styryl-1,2-oxathiine 2,2-dioxides afforded novel 5,9-dihydro-1H-[1,2]oxathiino[5,6-c][1,2,4]triazolo[1,2-a]pyridazine-1,3(2H)-dione 8,8-dioxides through a silica-mediated isomerisation of the initial [4 + 2] adducts.

A multi-step numerical approach is used to analyze the efficiency of an ion-funnel to transport ions over a wide range of m/z. A continuum approach based on the solution of the Navier-Stokes equations is applied to model the gas flow through a capillary connecting the atmospheric and subatmospheric sections of a mass spectrometer. A microscopic, fully kinetic approach based on the solution of the Boltzmann equation is used to examine the ion and gas transport through an ion-funnel kept at a 0.

The two-dimensional (2D) temperature profiles of an active-gain medium in a Cs + methane diode pumped alkali laser (DPAL) have been experimentally measured. This nonperturbative technique uses a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, which is longitudinally coupled into the cavity of an operating alkali laser to probe the distortion of the optical path length in the gain medium due to heating. The resulting interferograms are analyzed using the commercial program QuickFringe to quickly and accurately measure the distortion through which the temperature profile can be determined.

Broadband coherent Rayleigh-Brillouin scattering (CRBS) was used to measure translational gas temperatures for nitrogen, argon, and methane at the ambient pressure of 0.8 atm. Temperatures derived from spectral analysis were compared with experimentally-measured temperatures, with a maximum 5.

Gas and ion transport in the capillary-skimmer subatmospheric interface of a mass spectrometer, which is typically utilized to separate unevaporated micro-droplets from ions, was studied numerically using a two-step approach spanning multiple gas dynamic regimes. The gas flow in the heated capillary and in the interface was determined by solving numerically the Navier-Stokes equation. The capillary-to-skimmer gas/ion flow was modeled through the solution of the full Boltzmann equation with a force term.
