The coastal tussac () grasslands of the Falkland Islands are a critical seabird breeding habitat but have been drastically reduced by grazing and erosion. Meanwhile, the sensitivity of seabirds and tussac to climate change is unknown because of a lack of long-term records in the South Atlantic. Our 14,000-year multiproxy record reveals an ecosystem state shift following seabird establishment 5000 years ago, as marine-derived nutrients from guano facilitated tussac establishment, peat productivity, and increased fire.

However, very few studies evaluated the association of variations in DNA damage response genes and treatment outcomes and toxicity in brachytherapy-treated patients.
Purpose: To evaluate the association of inherited germline variations in DNA repair-associated genes with tumor control and treatment toxicity in patients treated with low-dose-rate prostate brachytherapy (LDRB).
Background: The study was conducted to evaluate the cytopathological findings and vaginal flora in cervical smear samples from women using the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) for a period of up to 7 years.
Study Design: Postinsertion cytology examinations were conducted on 187 women who had an LNG-IUS inserted between April and September 1998 in the family planning clinic of the Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
Results: During the 7 years of follow-up, a high frequency of candidiasis was found from the fourth through the seventh year of use in comparison to the first year of use.
Detailed photostability studies were carried out using purified delta-endotoxin crystals from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies HD-1 and HD-73. The mechanism and time course of sunlight inactivation was investigated by: (a) monitoring the tryptophan damage in the intact crystals by Raman spectroscopy, (b) amino acid analysis and (c) biological assays using insects. The results demonstrate that, for purified HD-1 or HD-73 crystals, the 300-380 nm range of the solar spectrum is largely responsible for bringing about crystal damage and consequent loss of toxicity.
