Chemotherapy and Functional Medicine in a Patient With Metastatic Breast Cancer: A Case Report.

More than one-half of all cancer patients use some combination of conventional and complementary medicine, but exactly how this is done and what the outcomes include are poorly understood. This case study reports the successful treatment of metastatic invasive ductal breast carcinoma by 2 physician groups with treatments that combined conventional chemotherapy with nutritional support guided by nutritional and digestive laboratory testing. The goal of minimizing side effects and enhancing outcomes was achieved in this patient who did not receive radiation therapy and is almost 3 y posttreatment with no evidence of recurrence.

How useful is the barium enema in the diagnosis of infantile Hirschsprung's disease?

We studied the usefulness of the barium enema to rule out Hirschsprung's disease (congenital megacolon) in the evaluation of infants with constipation. Results from barium enemas in 58 constipated infants and children who underwent rectal suction biopsies to rule out aganglionosis were evaluated in retrospect for the presence of a transition zone, delayed evacuation of barium, and colonic anatomic abnormalities. As expected, the presence of a transition zone was most accurate in predicting Hirschsprung's disease.

Effects of hypoxia, chloramphenicol succinate, and 2,4-dinitrophenol on glucose utilization, glycogen synthesis, adenylate energy charge, and hexose phosphates during the first two periods of nitrogen starvation.

We studied the effects of decreased aeration, chloramphenicol succinate, and 2,4-dinitrophenol on the cellular rates of glycogen synthesis and glucose utilization and on the cellular concentrations of adenine nucleotides, glucose 6-phosphate, fructose 1,6-diphosphate, and phosphoenolpyruvate during the first two periods of nitrogen starvation of Escherichia coli W4597(K). A quantitative relationship between the changes in the rates and the accompanying changes in the hexose phosphates is demonstrated. However, the relationship for glycogen synthesis is different in different sets of metabolic conditions.
