Steel wires are often inadequate for sternal closure for patients at high risk of sternal complications. This study compares a novel sternal closure system to conventional steel wires to assess its potential to reduce sternal complication rates and improve clinical outcomes. A retrospective study was conducted on 300 consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery via median sternotomy.

Purpose: In glioblastoma, the therapeutically intractable and resistant phenotypes can be derived from glioma stem cells, which often have different underlying mechanisms from non-stem glioma cells. Aberrant signaling across the EGFR-PTEN-AKT-mTOR pathways have been shown as common drivers of glioblastoma. Revealing the inter and intra-cellular heterogeneity within glioma stem cell populations in relations to signaling patterns through these pathways may be key to precision diagnostic and therapeutic targeting of these cells.

Article Synopsis
  • Recent research has classified a specific bacterial strain as low-risk for producing a certain enzyme affecting antibiotic efficacy, but there is limited data on how antibiotic choices impact patient outcomes in bacteremia.
  • This study focused on comparing clinical outcomes between patients treated with AmpC-directed β-lactam therapy and narrower spectrum therapies for ceftriaxone-susceptible bacteremia, reviewing records over an 8-year period from seven hospitals.
  • Results indicated that while carbapenem therapy showed trends toward lower mortality and longer treatment duration, these differences weren't statistically significant, emphasizing the need for proper antibiotic stewardship to avoid the development of drug-resistant bacteria.

Cancer and aging are inextricably linked, and older adults are a significant proportion of those diagnosed, treated, and living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. Several large prospective studies have enhanced our understanding of how to improve the assessment, treatment, and outcomes of older adults with cancer starting therapy. This article summarizes three recent high-impact trials that produced practice-changing implications for the management of older adults with cancer that led to guideline updates.

Background: Many studies assess aesthetic effectiveness of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA), with single-group designs as the most frequently applied designs in practice. This study systematically reviewed CaHA's effectiveness for aesthetic purposes among these studies.

Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across 5 bibliographic databases.
