Global health is affected by viral, bacterial, and fungal infections that cause chronic and often fatal diseases. Identifying novel antimicrobials through innovative methods that are active against human pathogens will create a new, necessary pipeline for chemical discovery and therapeutic development. Our goal was to determine whether algal production systems represent fertile ground for discovery of antibiotics and antifungals.

Objective: The primary objective was to determine the rate of clinical actions taken post-discharge on updated microbiology results by an ID pharmacist-led team. Secondary objectives were to describe the microbiology results requiring intervention, characterize interventions by type and severity, and determine time from result to clinical review.

Design: Retrospective cohort study.

Glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3β or GSK-3B) is a serine-threonine kinase involved in various pathways and cellular processes. Alteration in GSK-3β activity is associated with several neurological diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), bipolar disorder, and rare diseases like Rett syndrome. GSK-3β is also implicated in HIV-associated dementia (HAD), as it is upregulated in HIV-1-infected cells and plays a role in neuronal dysfunction.

Article Synopsis
  • Rumination is a common symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD), and this study explores its structural brain correlates, particularly focusing on the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) and the right precuneus.
  • While changes in the dlPFC were observed, they were not linked to rumination; instead, rumination correlated with structural properties in the right precuneus.
  • The research indicates that this precuneus region is part of larger functional networks associated with executive function, memory, and visual perception, suggesting that structural changes in the brain may influence rumination through these interconnected networks.
