The aim of this study was to compare the kinematics of reaching tasks at different speeds between children with neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP) and unaffected controls. This cross-sectional study included thirteen children with NBPP (10 ± 2 years old, of which six had upper Erb's palsy and seven had extended Erb's palsy) matched for age and sex with thirteen unaffected controls. Kinematic data were acquired using a Motion Monitor unit with a 3D motion tracking electromagnetic system (Liberty, Polhemus).

Background: The Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM), a pictorial scale for the measurement of pleasure and arousal dimensions of emotions, is one of the most applied tools in the emotion research field.

Objective: We present a detailed description of a remote method to collect affective ratings in response to pictures by using the SAM scale.

Methods: To empirically validate our remote method, we conducted a study using a digitized version of the SAM scale and delivered online didactic instructions that followed the normative rating procedure for the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) to the participants.

Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic caused psychological distress, which has been linked to emotional eating and an addiction to ultra-processed foods (UPFs).
  • A study with 368 Brazilian undergraduates found that addiction symptoms to UPFs significantly mediate the relationship between pandemic-related stress and emotional eating behaviors.
  • Results indicate that 61% of the stress's impact on emotional eating is attributable to UPF addiction, highlighting the need for public health strategies to focus on overcoming UPF addiction among stressed students.
