Previous studies on SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV reported the detection of viral RNA in the stool of both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. These clinical observations suggest that municipal and hospital wastewater from affected communities may contain SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Recent studies have also reported the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in human feces.

The larval form of tapeworms of the species cluster cause an important zoonotic infection, cystic echinococcosis (CE). Molecular characterization of the cluster's isolates from different hosts greatly contributes to a better understanding of its transmission dynamics. To date, no genetic information is available on CE in Slovenia.

Mammalian orthoreoviruses with reassortant genomes have recently been detected in various mammals and humans with respiratory, central nervous system, and gastrointestinal symptoms. This study describes the detection of the novel reassortant mammalian orthoreovirus SI-MRV07 in a traveler with gastroenteritis that returned from southeast Asia. The virus was initially detected with electron microscopy in stool, followed by propagation in the epithelial-like monkey kidney Marc145 cell line.

Objectives: A stool sample is the sample of choice for microbiological testing of enteric pathogens causing diarrhoea, but a rectal swab can be a more practical alternative. A prospective observational study was performed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of flocked rectal swab specimens using the syndromic molecular approach to determine the aetiology of diarrhoea in adults.

Methods: We compared the performance of rectal swabs with stool samples as the reference standard in determining viral, bacterial and protozoal pathogens using real-time multiplex PCR as well as standard stool culture.
