Background: Adults living with human immunodeficiency virus (ALWHIV) receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) exhibit higher pneumococcal carriage prevalence than adults without HIV (HIV-). To assess factors influencing high pneumococcal carriage in ALWHIV, we estimated pneumococcal carriage acquisition and clearance rates in a high transmission and disease-burdened setting at least 10 years after introducing infant PCV13 in routine immunisation.
Methods: We collected longitudinal nasopharyngeal swabs from individuals aged 18-45 in Blantyre, Malawi.
Analysis of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) obtained by lumbar puncture (LP) is an essential step for the diagnostic approach of neurological disorders, in particular neuro-infections. In low-resource settings, it is even often the only available diagnostic method. Despite its key contribution, little is known on the risks and benefits of LP in the large tropical areas where hospital-based neuroimaging is not available.

Method: A case-control study was conducted in the health district of Lubumbashi from February 2012 to December 2015. An exhaustive sampling, collecting all newborns with cleft lip and/or cleft palate (CL ± P) in maternity wards was conducted.
There is little published information on the epidemiology of neurological disorders in rural Central Africa, although the burden is considered to be substantial. This study aimed to investigate the pattern, etiology, and outcome of neurological disorders in children > 5 years and adults admitted to the rural hospital of Mosango, province of Kwilu, Democratic Republic of Congo, with a focus on severe and treatable infections of the central nervous system (CNS). From September 2012 to January 2015, 351 consecutive patients hospitalized for recent and/or ongoing neurological disorder were prospectively evaluated by a neurologist, subjected to a set of reference diagnostic tests in blood or cerebrospinal fluid, and followed-up for 3-6 months after discharge.
