Background: Contemporary guidelines advocate for initial debridement and single-stage definitive fixation with immediate soft tissue reconstruction for open fractures. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of single-stage stabilization and immediate definitive soft tissue coverage in open ankle fractures compared to closed fractures.

Methods: We compared all isolated open ankle fractures (OF) treated between January 2017 and June 2019 to a control group of operatively managed closed ankle fractures (CF).

Chromatin regulation provides a mechanism through which cells dynamically and rapidly regulate their gene expression profiles, playing a pivotal role in diverse biological processes and disease states. The Assay for Transposase-Accessible Chromatin with high-throughput sequencing (ATAC-seq) is a method that enables genome-wide detection of accessible chromatin regions, providing information on nucleosome positioning and the epigenetic regulation of the chromatin structure. ATAC-seq has been used in various biological contexts, and several reports have demonstrated its application to studying infections with viral or bacterial pathogens.

Background: cardiomyopathy is a distinct subset of arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, reported primarily in adults, that has predominantly left ventricular involvement and features of myocarditis. Clinical characteristics, risk stratification, and management of pediatric patients with variants are not well known. We sought to identify phenotypic features and prognosis of pediatric patients with pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants.

Article Synopsis
  • Event monitors are increasingly used to assess arrhythmias in patients with congenital heart disease, with only 8.8% showing critical events upon evaluation.
  • The study reviewed data from 2017 to 2020, finding that patients with complex congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathy were more likely to experience these critical events.
  • A significant number (65%) of patients with identified critical events received treatment, and usage of event monitors rose by 52% in the study period.

Introduction: Atrophy of the nucleus basalis of Meynert (NBM) is an early indicator of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, reduced integrity of the NBM white matter tracts may be more relevant for cognitive impairment and progression to dementia than NBM volume. Research is needed to compare differences in NBM volume and integrity of the lateral and medial NBM tracts across early and later stages of AD progression.
