We studied the effect of intermittent hypobaric hypoxia on morphofunctional characteristics of the thyroid gland during experimental hypothyroidism. Functional activity of the thyroid gland increased in the early period of hypoxia. Morphofunctional parameters reached a constant level with increasing the duration of hypoxia to 7-15 days.

Within 5 days of hypoxia there was an increase in thyroid functional activity, but on days 15-30 there was a decrease in T3 and T4 concentrations and an increase in thyroid-stimulating hormone. Clear correlations were found between the morphometric indices of the thyroid epithelium and the blood concentration of T3 and T4. There was a relationship between the levels of thyroid hormones and the state of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Thyroid lesions were histologically studied on surgical material obtained in 1992-1996 in 12 regions of Russian Federation and Republic of Belarus. Various forms of thyroid pathology were considered with reference to local ecological situation. An increase of thyroid carcinoma incidence and particularly that of papillary carcinoma was observed in regions with radiation pollution (Chelyabinsk and Bryansk regions).

Acute enteric infection was reproduced in rabbits, used as an experimental model, receiving Aspergillus flavus metabolites with food for 15 days and inoculated rectally with enterotoxigenic strain Klebsiella pneumoniae K24 6723. Pathomorphological study revealed the penetration of Klebsiella into microplicate cells of the intestinal epithelium, the proliferation of bacteria in the lamina propria and in the cupolas of Peyer's patches, as well as in phagolysosomes of leukocytes and macrophages. The lesion of the mucous membrane in both large and small intestine, accompanied by the hyperplasia of lymphoid follicles, was noted.
