The effect of pain neuroscience education on chronic postsurgical pain after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial.

Background And Purpose:  Chronic postsurgical pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is frequent and may be reduced by pain neuroscience education (PNE), teaching people about pain from a neurobiological perspective. This study investigated primarily the effectiveness of 2 individual sessions of PNE versus usual care on pain levels 3 months postoperatively in patients undergoing TKA. Secondary outcomes were physical functioning, stiffness, health-related quality of life, pain catastrophizing, attention to pain, and levels of anxiety and depression.

Biopsychosocial complexity in patients scheduled for elective TKA surgery: A feasibility pilot study with the INTERMED self-assessment questionnaire.

Objective: Primary aim; to determine the feasibility of implementation of the INTERMED Self-Assessment (IM-SA) in adult patients scheduled for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Secondary aim; to measure biopsychosocial complexity, referral to psychiatry or psychology in cases of complexity and to gain insight into the relation between biopsychosocial complexity and length of stay (LOS), method of discharge (MOD) and polypharmacy.

Methods: A feasibility study was conducted with 76 participants in a general hospital in the Netherlands.

In Alzheimer's Disease (AD) dual-tracer positron emission tomography (PET) studies with 2-[18F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) and 11C-labelled Pittsburgh Compound B (PIB) are used to assess metabolism and cerebral amyloid-β deposition, respectively. Regional cerebral metabolism and blood flow (rCBF) are closely coupled, both providing an index for neuronal function. The present study compared PIB-derived rCBF, estimated by the ratio of tracer influx in target regions relative to reference region (R1) and early-stage PIB uptake (ePIB), to FDG scans.

Optimizing diagnostic testing for venous thromboembolism.

This article provides an overview of the optimized diagnosis of venous thromboembolism, with a focus on the appropriate use of thrombophilia screening.
