Local rainfall is more likely than distant thunderstorms to affect movement behaviour in Northern Kenyan elephants.

Previous research indicates that African savanna elephants change their movements preceding or coincident with local rainfall and it has been suggested that they respond to thunder in remote storms-perhaps reading seismic cues. We therefore aimed to test if elephants in Northern Kenya adhere to distinct daytime movement states between the wet and dry periods, and whether their abrupt movement changes precede local wet periods in response to lightning strikes from a specific compass heading. In our study site, lightning to the North and East often preceded local rainfall and could possibly be used to anticipate local wet periods, but local rainfall appears a more likely trigger of behavioural change.

Background/objectives: Nurse-like cells (NLCs) derived from monocytes in the tumor microenvironment support the growth of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells. Here, we investigated the effects of a CX3CR1 (fractalkine receptor) antagonist (KAND567) on autologous monocytes and their pro-survival effects on CLL cells in vitro.

Background: Low maternal urinary iodine concentration (UIC) during pregnancy is associated with adverse offspring neurodevelopment. Thyroglobulin (Tg) has been suggested as a more sensitive biomarker than UIC of long-term iodine status, but associations of Tg with neurodevelopment and the possible mediating role of thyroid function remain unknown.

Aim: To study whether maternal Tg is associated with i) maternal and newborn thyroid function and ii) offspring IQ and brain morphology.

The cytokine interferon-gamma (IFNγ) plays a multifaceted role in intestinal immune responses ranging from anti- to pro-inflammatory depending on the setting. Here, using a 3D co-culture system based on human intestinal epithelial organoids, we explore the capacity of IFNγ-exposure to reprogram intestinal epithelia and thereby directly modulate lymphocyte responses. IFNγ treatment of organoids led to transcriptional reprogramming, marked by a switch to a pro-inflammatory gene expression profile, including transcriptional upregulation of the chemokines CXCL9, CXCL10, and CXCL11.

Lower confidence and increased error sensitivity in OCD patients while learning under volatility.

A decoupling between confidence and action could relate to compulsive behaviour as seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The link between confidence and action in OCD has been investigated in clinical case-control studies and in the general population with discrepant findings. The generalizability of findings from highly-compulsive general population samples to clinical OCD samples has been questioned.
