A community-based geriatric interprofessional education experience and its impact on post-graduate collaborative practice.

While a growing body of interprofessional education (IPE) literature demonstrates a positive impact on learner knowledge, there is limited data on its long-term impact on collaborative practice (CP). With the growth of the aging population globally, understanding both the long-term impact on CP and sustainability of community-based geriatric experiential IPE programs are imperative. This study explores the impact of the Interprofessional Geriatric Curriculum (IPGC), a community-based geriatric IPE program, on post-graduate clinical practice among seven health professions.

Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Case Series: The Pharmacist's Role in Preventing Elder Abuse.

Elder abuse encompasses many types of abuse, including physical, sexual, emotional, neglect, and financial abuse. Abuse, including neglect and exploitation, is experienced by about 1 in 10 people aged 60 and older who live at home. However, this is likely an underestimation.

Cognitive status predicts preoperative instruction compliance.

The most common postoperative complication for older adults is perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PNCD). Its greatest risk factor is preoperative cognitive impairment. Cognitive impairment also predicts higher likelihood of postoperative complications.

Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Case Series: Poly-Provider Leading to Polypharmacy.

This case study reviews the complicated treatment of an older person under the care of numerous specialists in the ambulatory care setting. As various providers made concurrent changes in pharmacotherapy without communication with other providers, the patient experienced acute changes and decompensation. Polypharmacy played a significant role in the acute decompensation of the patient.

Beyond Cognitive Screening: Establishing an Interprofessional Perioperative Brain Health Initiative.

Objective: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is now recognized as the most common postoperative complication in older surgical patients. Current multidisciplinary guidelines recommend simple cognitive screening of older adults before surgery. Patients identified at risk should have input from an interprofessional team with expertise caring for older surgical patients.
