Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review aims to evaluate fMRI studies on bipolar disorder (BD) by comparing brain connectivity in BD patients with those having other psychiatric disorders and healthy individuals to identify potential diagnostic biomarkers.
  • The review included 60 studies published since 2015, focusing on structural (20), functional (33), and effective (7) connectivity, following PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews.
  • Key findings reveal that BD is associated with abnormalities in specific brain areas like the frontal gyrus and cingulate cortex, while disrupted connectivity in networks related to emotion and reward, as well as in the salience, default mode, and executive control networks, suggests the potential for neuroimaging to serve as a diagnostic tool in the future.
