Northeast Brazil was the first region to detect a significant increase in babies born with microcephaly associated with prenatal zika virus infection in 2015. Rio Grande do Sul (RS) state was less impacted due to the temperate climate preventing the spread of the vector. This study investigated the prevalence and etiology of congenital microcephaly in RS in two different periods.

Article Synopsis
  • Commercial plantations in northern Brazil have faced increased challenges due to the fungal leaf disease known as leaf blight (CLB), primarily affecting local crops.
  • A survey in three northeastern plantations identified a diverse range of fungal species responsible for CLB, highlighting the disease's complexity.
  • Researchers discovered two new species of fungi, confirmed their pathogenicity, and classified several isolates according to specific naming conventions based on genetic and morphological analyses.

Eucalyptus plantations can be affected by species of defoliating caterpillars. The integrated management of this group primarily involves a monitoring system, natural enemies, and biological products. Alternative control methods, including the use of conventional light traps, have not been adopted, mostly because of their low efficiency.

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria strains from special formulations have been used to optimize eucalyptus cutting production. To undertake quality control for the formulated products, the rhizobacterial strains should be characterized to assess their purity and authentication. In the present study, we characterized nine strains of rhizobacteria, including three Bacillus subtilis (S1, S2 and 3918), two Pseudomonas sp.
