Two-step hierarchical binary classification of cancerous skin lesions using transfer learning and the random forest algorithm.

Skin lesion classification plays a crucial role in the early detection and diagnosis of various skin conditions. Recent advances in computer-aided diagnostic techniques have been instrumental in timely intervention, thereby improving patient outcomes, particularly in rural communities lacking specialized expertise. Despite the widespread adoption of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in skin disease detection, their effectiveness has been hindered by the limited size and data imbalance of publicly accessible skin lesion datasets.

The Use of Dog Collars Offers Significant Benefits to Rabies Vaccination Campaigns: The Case of Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Tools and resources that could increase dog vaccination coverage have become increasingly critical towards progressing the goal to eliminate dog-mediated human rabies by 2030. In this regard, dog collars that are fitted during vaccination campaigns could potentially enhance owner participation. The use of dog collars will, however, increase the cost per dog vaccinated and the impact and benefit of this practice should be elucidated.

Transmission networks of SARS-CoV-2 in Coastal Kenya during the first two waves: A retrospective genomic study.

Background: Detailed understanding of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) regional transmission networks within sub-Saharan Africa is key for guiding local public health interventions against the pandemic.

Methods: Here, we analysed 1139 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from positive samples collected between March 2020 and February 2021 across six counties of Coastal Kenya (Mombasa, Kilifi, Taita Taveta, Kwale, Tana River, and Lamu) to infer virus introductions and local transmission patterns during the first two waves of infections. Virus importations were inferred using ancestral state reconstruction, and virus dispersal between counties was estimated using discrete phylogeographic analysis.

Valve-in-Valve Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation for the Failing Surgical Perceval Bioprosthesis.

Introduction: The Perceval Valve has been increasingly used in Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (SAVR) recently due to ease of implantation. However, we have seen some cases of relatively early haemodynamic failure of the Perceval valve and these patients may then present for valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve implantation (ViV-TAVI). Experience of ViV-TAVI in the Perceval valve is limited.

Tracking the introduction and spread of SARS-CoV-2 in coastal Kenya.

Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 is important for understanding both the evolution and the patterns of local and global transmission. Here, we generated 311 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from samples collected in coastal Kenya between 17 March and 31 July 2020. We estimated multiple independent SARS-CoV-2 introductions into the region were primarily of European origin, although introductions could have come through neighbouring countries.
