Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the prevalence of parental smoking among childhood cancer survivors (CCS) in Switzerland and its impact on their respiratory health.* -
  • Researchers found that 18% of mothers and 23% of fathers smoke; maternal smoking increased the likelihood of CCS experiencing recurrent upper respiratory infections and lower respiratory symptoms.* -
  • The findings suggest that healthcare providers should focus on reducing caregiver smoking and offer support for smoking cessation to improve respiratory outcomes for CCS.*

More than 170 years after the synthesis of α-aminonitriles by the reaction of Strecker, α-phosphinonitriles, and α-arsenonitriles have been prepared and characterized by NMR and IR spectroscopy. For the simplest derivatives, the reaction was carried out by reaction of cyanomethyltributylstannane with phosphorus or arsenic trichloride, followed by a chemoselective reduction of the dichlorophosphine and dichloroarsine formed to the corresponding primary phosphine and arsine. The phosphinoacetonitrile can be stored at -80 °C for months in its pure state, but arsenoacetonitrile decomposes at this temperature.

Background: Epidemiological studies often rely on self-reported health problems and validation greatly improves study quality. In a study of late effects after childhood cancer, we validated self-reported cardiovascular problems by contacting general practitioners (GPs). This paper describes: (a) the feasibility of this approach; and (b) the agreement between survivor-reports and reports from their GP.

Article Synopsis
  • Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease linked to abnormal growth of bone marrow cells, leading to organ issues, and some survivors develop chronic health conditions (CHC).
  • In a study comparing 123 LCH survivors to their siblings, over half of LCH survivors reported at least one CHC, with higher prevalence of cardiovascular, endocrine, musculoskeletal, and digestive issues among them.
  • Key factors associated with developing CHC included having multisystem LCH, multifocal bone involvement, and pituitary gland issues, highlighting the need for ongoing health screenings for LCH survivors.

Purpose: Reported prevalence of cancer-related fatigue (CRF) among childhood cancer survivors (CCS) varies widely, and evidence on factors associated with CRF among CCS is limited. We aimed to investigate the prevalence of CRF and its associated factors among adult CCS in Switzerland.

Methods: In a prospective cohort study, we invited adult CCS who survived at least 5 years since last cancer diagnosis, and were diagnosed when age 0-20 years and treated at Inselspital Bern between 1976 and 2015 to complete two fatigue-measuring instruments: the Checklist Individual Strength subjective fatigue subscale (CIS8R; increased fatigue 27-34, severe fatigue ≥ 35) and the numerical rating scale (NRS; moderate fatigue 4-6, severe fatigue 7-10).
