We report a case of retroperitoneal Castleman's disease of the hyaline vascular type. The tumor was excised with the left kidney because of tenacious adhesion to the renal pedicle. We suggest that knowledge of Castleman's disease in the retroperitoneal area would help to avoid an unnecessarily extensive operation.

A 49-year-old man was admitted with the suspicion of renal foreign body. A fragment of wire rope was penetrated from his right lumbar region while working. Drip infusion pyelography and computed tomography films revealed a linear metallic object in the region of the right kidney.

Twenty-three cases of primary hyperparathyroidism were experienced at Wakayama Medical College Hospital and affiliated hospitals between January, 1969 and December 1985. Histopathological findings were adenoma in 22 cases, hyperplasia in 1 case.
