The excitotoxic effect of NMDA on human lymphocyte immune function.

N-Methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA)-activated glutamate receptors are expressed in lymphocytes, but their roles have not yet been defined. We show that incubation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes with NMDA resulted in increased intracellular calcium and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels through effects on NMDA-activated glutamate receptors. In terms of ROS production, T cells were most affected, followed by NK cells, whereas B cell ROS levels were not increased.

Natural polysaccharide carrageenan inhibits toxic effect of gram-negative bacterial endotoxins.

The protective effect of polysaccharide carrageenan on the damaging effect of endotoxins of gram-negative bacteria was studied in vivo and in vitro. Carrageenan increased mouse resistance to the toxic effect of LPS. The degree of protection depended on polysaccharide concentration and administration time and route.

The body distribution and biological action of xenobiotics.

The authors explored the tissue and intracellular distribution in the body of xenobiotics (aniline-1-14C hydroclorate, dioxane-1,4-14C, toluol-1-14C, phenol-1-14C and 1,2-14C ethylene glycol) following their administration in single doses to white rats. The distribution of the tested substances in the body was correlated with their toxic effects. An analysis of distribution coefficients revealed a multifactorial nature of the distribution in the body of xenobiotics--environmental pollutants.
