Fish farming in sea cages is a growing component of the global food industry. A prominent ecosystem impact of this industry is the increase in the downward flux of organic matter, which stimulates anaerobic mineralization and sulfide production in underlying sediments. When free sulfide is released to the overlying water, this can have a toxic effect on local marine ecosystems.

As iron and manganese are considered antagonistic in plants, calculation of the Fe/Mn ratios was also included by using results from Mn determination earlier performed in the same samples. Samples were collected from 792 infants delivered consecutively at the National University Hospital in Reykjavík in 1987. The concentration of IgE, but not that of IgA, was found to increase with increasing gestational age at birth.
