Background: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a chronic and progressive condition that afflicts patients of all ages, including neonates. Previously, we reported that neonatal pigs fed formulas rich in medium-chain (MCFA), compared with those fed formulas rich in long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) for 21 d, developed panacinar steatosis with no changes in whole-body adiposity.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to examine the temporal onset and development of NAFLD in neonatal pigs in response to MCFA feeding.

Article Synopsis
  • In partial onset epilepsy, seizures start in specific brain areas and can become resistant to medication, making neurosurgery a key treatment option that risks neurological deficits.
  • A study on mice with focal neocortical epilepsy applied precise cuts using femtosecond laser pulses around the seizure focus, significantly reducing seizure frequency by 87% and limiting the spread of seizures.
  • The surgical cuts led to minimal collateral damage and did not impair motor skills in reaching tasks, indicating potential for this method as an effective neurosurgical strategy for treating refractory focal epilepsy.

Objective: To determine if a single brain biopsy utilizing a freeze-core needle harvest system Cassi II under ultrasound guidance provides a diagnostic sample; to evaluate the technique's efficacy in procuring diagnostic samples in comparison with "open" surgical biopsies; and to describe intraoperative complications associated with the technique.

Study Design: Experimental clinical study.

Animals: Seventeen dogs and four cats with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) diagnoses of readily surgically accessible intracranial masses.

In the context of continuous emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern (VOCs), one strategy to prevent the severe outcomes of COVID-19 is developing safe and effective broad-spectrum vaccines. Here, we present preclinical studies of a RBD vaccine derived from the Gamma SARS-CoV-2 variant adjuvanted with Alum. The Gamma-adapted RBD vaccine is more immunogenic than the Ancestral RBD vaccine in terms of inducing broader neutralizing antibodies.
