Reimagining subjectivities in place: Necropolitical logics of safer supply and housing in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Canada's overdose crisis has prompted the implementation of a range of safer supply programs, which provide prescription alternatives to illicit drugs to reduce overdose deaths and related harms. However, the effectiveness and transformative potential of these programs are shaped by the broader socio-spatial contexts in which they are implemented, particularly in marginalized housing environments like single room occupancy (SRO) buildings in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. Through qualitative interviews with 26 people receiving safer supply undertaken from October 2022 to July 2023 in Vancouver, Canada's Downtown Eastside-one of the epicentres of Canada's overdose crisis and the location of most of the country's safer supply programming-this paper examines what subjectivities safer supply makes possible for people who use drugs within the context of SRO housing.

Magnetic modulation of keyhole instability during laser welding and additive manufacturing.

Keyhole instability during laser welding and laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) can cause keyhole collapse and pore formation. Using high-speed x-ray imaging, we demonstrate that the flow vortex-induced protrusion on the rear keyhole wall is crucial in initiating keyhole instability. Applying a transverse magnetic field suppresses the keyhole instability by driving a secondary thermoelectric magnetohydrodynamics (TEMHD) flow that alters the net flow vortex.

Background: Cardiovascular risk management is beneficial, but stringent glycemic control does not prevent the progression of distal sensorimotor polyneuropathy (DSPN). Persistent hyperglycemia-induced alterations and cardiovascular factors may contribute to diabetes-associated nerve damage. This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between skin auto-fluorescence (sAF), an indicator of dermal advanced glycation end-product (AGE) accumulations, cardiovascular risk, and changes in peripheral nerve integrity.

Clinical Outcomes and Financial Impact of a POEM Program at a Rural Tertiary Medical Center: Our First Five Years.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess the 5-year impact of a per oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) program on both clinical and financial outcomes for our hospital system and the rural community we serve.

Methods: We evaluated the clinical and financial outcomes of all patients who underwent POEM for achalasia. Patients were also contacted by phone to complete the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease-Health Related Quality of Life (GERD-HRQL) questionnaire postoperatively.

Acute myeloid leukemias (AMLs) have an overall poor prognosis with many high-risk cases co-opting stem cell gene regulatory programs, yet the mechanisms through which this occurs remain poorly understood. Increased expression of the stem cell transcription factor, MECOM, underlies one key driver mechanism in largely incurable AMLs. How MECOM results in such aggressive AML phenotypes remains unknown.
