Management of acute perianal abscess: is surgeon specialization associated with improved outcomes?

Background: Acute surgical units (ASU) are increasingly being adopted and in our system are staffed by colorectal and non-colorectal general surgeons. This study aims to evaluate whether surgeon specialization was associated with improved outcomes in perianal abscess.

Methods: Patients with perianal abscess admitted to the ASU between 2016 and 2020 were identified from a prospective database and their medical records reviewed.

Human factors in pelvic exenteration: themes in high-performing teams.

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the role of human factors in pelvic exenteration and how team performance is optimized in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative phases.

Method: Qualitative analysis of focus groups was used to capture authentic human interactions that reflect real-world multiprofessional performance. Theatre teams were treated as clusters, with a particular focus group containing participants who worked together regularly.

Effect of Surgical Humidification on Inflammation and Peritoneal Trauma in Colorectal Cancer Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Pre-clinical studies indicate that dry-cold-carbon-dioxide (DC-CO2) insufflation leads to more peritoneal damage, inflammation and hypothermia compared with humidified-warm-CO (HW-CO2). Peritoneum and core temperature in patients undergoing colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery were compared.

Methods: Sixty-six patients were randomized into laparoscopic groups; those insufflated with DC-CO2 or HW-CO2.

Molecular and genomic characterisation of a panel of human anal cancer cell lines.

Anal cancer is a rare disease that has doubled in incidence over the last four decades. Current treatment and survival of patients with this disease has not changed substantially over this period of time, due, in part, to a paucity of preclinical models to assess new therapeutic options. To address this hiatus, we set-out to establish, validate and characterise a panel of human anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) cell lines by employing an explant technique using fresh human ASCC tumour tissue.
