Surgical Management of Invasive Atypical Fibroxanthomas/Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcomas of the Scalp: A Systematic Review Comparing Outer Table Resection to Full-Thickness Craniectomy.

Invasive atypical fibroxanthomas and undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcomas of the scalp are relatively rare spindle cell tumors that recur at high rates. Wide local excision and Mohs surgery alone are not feasible for the definitive management of lesions adhering to the underlying pericranium and/or calvarium. This brief clinical study presents 2 patient cases and includes a systematic review of the literature.

The Role of Resection of the Outer Table of the Cranium in Locally Invasive Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Scalp.

Introduction: Nonmelanoma skin cancer is the most common malignancy of the scalp. Of these, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most troublesome. It poses a challenge to the surgeons caring for these patients as the anatomy of the scalp makes excision and reconstruction difficult.

Modified Chondrocutaneous Flaps for Middle Helical Rim Defects.

This article describes a unique approach for reconstruction of large helical rim defects. By raising bilateral chondrocutaneous flaps of the helical rim while including a semicircular chondrocutaneous excision of the adjacent scapha and antihelix, large defects can be repaired with minimal loss to the overall external ear circumference. This is a technically simple and reliable method that has resulted in excellent cosmetic outcomes and minimal morbidity in our practice.

Placement of Dermal Regeneration Template on Fibrotic Dura.

We report the case of a male presenting with a large, fungating Marjolin ulcer over a prior craniectomy defect that had undergone several attempts at reconstruction. On presentation, he had a large area of exposed, fibrotic dura that ultimately required excision of the outer layer prior to placement of Integra (Integra LifeSciences, Plainsboro, NJ) and subsequent split-thickness skin grafting. Although there have been four other reports of dermal regeneration templates being used on exposed dura, this is the first case report of one being used on exposed dura that required dural preparation prior to placement.
