Improving Cancer Care for Women Seeking Services in the Veterans Health Administration Through the Breast and Gynecological Oncology System of Excellence.

Women are the fastest growing population among Veterans and have substantial risk factors that increase their likelihood for developing cancer. To ensure that the Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Health Administration (VHA) offers the best possible cancer care to women Veterans, it established the Breast and Gynecologic Oncology System of Excellence (BGSoE) in 2021. The BGSoE offers telehealth oncology services and a comprehensive cancer navigation program.

Associations Between a Primary Care-Delivered Alcohol-Related Brief Intervention and Subsequent Opioid-Related Outcomes.

Objective: The co-occurrence of unhealthy alcohol use and opioid misuse is high and associated with increased rates of overdose, emergency health care utilization, and death. The current study examined whether receipt of an alcohol-related brief intervention is associated with reduced risk of negative downstream opioid-related outcomes.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included all VISN-6 Veterans Affairs (VA) patients with Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test-Consumption (AUDIT-C) screening results (N=492,748) from 2014 to 2019.

Trajectories of Physical Resilience Among Older Veterans With Stage 4 CKD.

Rationale & Objective: Although functional impairment is common among older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD), functional reserve before an acute health event and physical resilience after the event have not been characterized in this population. The purpose of this study was to identify distinct patterns of physical function before and after an acute health event among older veterans with stage 4 CKD.

Study Design: Prospective cohort study.

Comprehensive Caregiver Supports and Ascertainment and Treatment of Veteran Pain.

Disabled Veterans commonly experience pain. The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) provides training, a stipend, and services to family caregivers of eligible Veterans to support their caregiving role. We compared ascertainment of veteran pain and pain treatment through health care encounters and medications (pain indicators) of participants (treated group) and non-participants (comparison group) using inverse probability treatment weights.
