Nucleic acid sequences of the prion gene (PRNP) were examined and genotypes compiled for 76 white-tailed deer from northern Illinois, which previously tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD), and 120 negative animals selected to control for geographic location and age. Nine nucleotide polymorphisms, seven silent and two coding, were found in the sampled population. All observed polymorphisms except two of very low frequency were observed in both negative and positive animals, although five polymorphic loci had significantly different distributions of alleles between infected and non-infected individuals.

The reaction of mononuclear [LFe(III)] where L represents the trianionic ligand 1,4,7-tris(4-tert-butyl-2-mercaptobenzyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane with NiCl(2).6H(2)O and subsequent oxidations with [Ni(III)(tacn)(2)](ClO(4))(3) (tacn = 1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and PbO(2)/methanesulfonic acid produced an isostructural series of complexes [LFeNiFeL](n)()(+) (n = 2 (1), n = 3 (2), n = 4 (3)), which were isolated as PF(6)(-) (1, 3) or ClO(4)(-) salts (2). The molecular structures were established by X-ray crystallography for [LFeNiFeL](ClO(4))(2).

The hexadentate, pendant arm macrocycle 1,4,7-tris(4-tert-butyl-2-mercaptobenzyl)-1,4,7-triazacyclononane (H(3)L) has been synthesized and isolated as its trihydrochloride, H(3)L.3HCl, or sodium salt, Na(3)L, and its coordination chemistry with first-row transition metals has been studied. Mononuclear complexes of the type [LM(III)] (M = Ga (1), In (2), V (3), Cr (4), Mn (5), Fe,Co (6)) have been isolated as have the one-electron-oxidized forms [LM]PF(6) (M = V(IV) (3a), Mn(IV) (5a)).

The evaluation and management of patients with occult bacteremia is controversial. The purpose of this study was to define the prevailing practices in the emergency management of occult bacteremia. Short, anonymous surveys were mailed to all 517 members of the Section on Emergency Medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess whether the plasma norepinephrine/3,4-dihydroxyphenylglycol ratio (NE/DHPG) is of diagnostic relevance for patients with a pheochromocytoma.

Subjects And Methods: In 18 patients with a histologically proven pheochromocytoma and in nine patients with congestive heart failure, plasma levels of NE, epinephrine (EPI), and DHPG (radioenzymatic method) were determined after 20 minutes of supine rest. In 10 healthy subjects, the plasma catecholamine responses to active standing (5 minutes) and mental arithmetic (5 minutes) were measured.
