Mucocutaneous herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections that are resistant to therapy with acyclovir have been recognized with increasing frequency in patients with the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, although alternative therapies in this setting have not been widely studied. Twenty-six consecutive patients are reported with human immunodeficiency virus infection, who received foscarnet therapy for acyclovir-resistant HSV. Clinical response was noted in 81% of patients; complete reepithelialization of HSV lesions occurred in 73%.

We studied the efficacy and tolerability of metoprolol, administered alone or in combination therapy, in 703 hypertensive patients. We observed a significant decrease in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in patients treated with metoprolol alone or with metoprolol and a diuretic. Of these, 60% to 85% achieved a diastolic blood pressure of 12 kPa (90 mmHg) or lower during the 12-week trial.

Ninety-nine patients took part in a multicentre, long-term study of metoprolol in the treatment of hypertension. Significant reductions in blood pressure and heart rate were achieved by the use of metoprolol alone, or in combination with other antihypertensive agents. Side effects were similar to those seen with other beta-adrenergic blocking agents, except that bronchospasm and cold extremities were rarely encountered.
