Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 is an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-membrane resident protein that inserts a double bond into saturated fatty acids, converting them into their monounsaturated counterparts. Previous studies have demonstrated an important role for SCD1 in modulating tissue and systemic health. Purpose: Limited information is available regarding chronic treatment with pirfenidone, an anti-fibrotic drug. Effects of long-term open-label pirfenidone were evaluated in a small cohort with Hermansky-Pudlak syndrome (HPS), a rare autosomal recessive disorder with highly penetrant pulmonary fibrosis.

Results: Three patients with HPS pulmonary fibrosis treated with open-label pirfenidone and twenty-one historical controls randomized to placebo were studied at a single center.

Detecting a target by measuring its forward scattered field is of interest for harbor surveillance because target strength levels are generally higher in the forward direction than in the backward direction for simple geometries. An acoustic barrier based on forward scattering was demonstrated in a nearly range-independent shallow water environment. The experimental location was characterized by high reverberation, low temporal signal coherence, and, as a result, few stable multipath arrivals due to the fluctuating sea surface.

Time reversal communication exploits spatial diversity to achieve spatial and temporal focusing in complex ocean environments. Spatial diversity can be provided easily by a vertical array in a waveguide. Alternatively, spatial diversity can be obtained from a virtual horizontal array generated by two elements, a transmitter and a receiver, due to relative motion between them, referred to as a synthetic aperture.
