We present here a passive and label-free droplet microfluidic platform to sort cells stepwise by lactate and proton secretion from glycolysis. A technology developed in our lab, Sorting by Interfacial Tension (SIFT), sorts droplets containing single cells into two populations based on pH by using interfacial tension. Cellular glycolysis lowers the pH of droplets through proton secretion, enabling passive selection based on interfacial tension and hence single-cell glycolysis.

Hyperglycemia is associated with increased in-hospital morbidity and mortality, especially in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Propofol, a common anesthetic used in the ICU, may cause hyperglycemia by inducing insulin resistance, reducing insulin-stimulated glucose uptake in muscles, and attenuating insulin-mediated suppression of hepatic glucose. We present the case of a 58-year-old female who was admitted for sepsis secondary to cellulitis but required intubation for respiratory failure.

Kerala, a south Indian state witnessed several outbreaks of Nipah encephalitis since 2018, a zoonotic viral disease with significant pandemic potential. This review highlights the relevance of surveillance and health system preparedness, infection control, early diagnosis and treatment with broad-spectrum antivirals, environmental conservation, and community engagement in mitigating Nipah outbreaks. Additionally, it emphasises the importance of developing new biologicals and anti-viral drugs to combat the disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Effective mathematical skills are essential for nursing practice and patient safety, prompting exploration of factors that cause anxiety among nursing students related to math in their education.
  • A mixed methods study involved an online survey and focus group interviews with nursing students at an Australian university, revealing that around three-quarters of participants experienced some level of math-related anxiety, often stemming from negative past experiences and fears of making errors.
  • Findings indicate the need for diverse teaching strategies and possibly incorporating specialist educators to address the challenges of math anxiety in nursing education, ultimately enhancing student confidence and competency.
