Currently, the OECD has adopted three defined approaches (DAs) for eye hazard identification of non-surfactant liquids and solids (TG467) according to the three UN GHS categories (Cat.1, Cat.2, No Cat.

This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of a geopolymer binder of the type of Na-poly(ferro-silico-aluminate) as a matrix for the stabilization of heavy metals along with their effect on the development of structural performances. The artificial contamination of soil with ions was carried out and used to prepare an alkali-activated iron-rich lateritic soil binder. Further, various microstructural analyses were carried out to explain the stabilization mechanism.

The Short Time Exposure (STE) test evaluates eye irritation potential using a 3-(4,5-di-methylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. MTT assays may underpredict results for some substances that directly reduce MTT (i.e.

The purpose of this study was to develop a defined approach (DA) for eye hazard identification according to the three UN GHS categories for surfactants (DASF). The DASF is based on a combination of Reconstructed human Cornea-like Epithelium test methods (OECD TG 492; EpiOcular™ EIT and SkinEthic™ HCE EIT) and the modified Short Time Exposure (STE) test method (0.5% concentration of the test substance after a 5-min exposure).

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) is a promising process for harvesting energy from the salinity gradient between two solutions without environmental impacts. Seawater (SW) and river water (RW) are considered the main RED feed solutions because of their good availability. In Okinawa Island (Japan), SW desalination via the reverse osmosis (RO) can be integrated with the RED process due to the production of a large amount of RO brine (concentrated SW, containing ~1 mol/dm of NaCl), which is usually discharged directly into the sea.
