We show that the mode strengths of a guided field in an arbitrary asymmetric channel waveguide can be uniquely determined from self-referencing interferometric measurements at the exit plane of the waveguide. This requires knowledge of both the amplitude and phase of the complex electric field distribution. Although the amplitude can be obtained from the measured intensity profile easily, the phase retrieval is usually non-trivial.

Our concept was tested with two OPAs having different collimation ranges. Both OPA designs have 3-μm waveguide spacing and the maximum beam steering range is about 30° based on wavelength tuning around 1550 nm.

Forest management with different harvesting regimes has a significant impact on soil water status and consequently on greenhouse gas emissions from peat soils. In this paper, we have used the process-based JSBACH-HIMMELI model to simulate the effects of alternative harvesting regimes, namely non-harvested (NH), selection harvesting (SH; 70 % of stem volume harvested) and clear-cutting (CC; 100 % of stem volume harvested), on soil CH and CO fluxes in peatland forests.

The effect of the 2018 extreme meteorological conditions in Europe on methane (CH) emissions is examined using estimates from four atmospheric inversions calculated for the period 2005-2018. For most of Europe, we find no anomaly in 2018 compared to the 2005-2018 mean. However, we find a positive anomaly for the Netherlands in April, which coincided with positive temperature and soil moisture anomalies suggesting an increase in biogenic sources.
