An implant releasing the gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone agonist histrelin maintains medical castration for up to 30 months in metastatic prostate cancer.

Purpose: The administration of gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone agonists is well established for treating metastatic prostate cancer. In an ongoing study we evaluated the effect of a long acting implant that releases the gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone agonist histrelin ([ImBzl]D-His6,Pro9-Net) in 15 patients with disseminated prostate cancer.

The regulatory role of tri-iodothyronine on the production of alpha-fetoprotein and albumin by mouse fetal liver cells.

The purpose of this study was to assess possible effects of tri-iodothyronine (T3) on the production of alpha fetoprotein (AFP) and albumin by mouse fetal liver cells. AFP from serum-free conditioned media of TIB73 mouse fetal liver cells was measured by immunoradiometric assay and albumin was measured by chromogenic assay. The expression of mRNAs was quantified by Northern blotting analysis.

Expanding multiple marker screening for Down's syndrome to include Edward's syndrome.

Information on maternal age and maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein, unconjugated oestriol (uE3), and human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) levels was used to investigate retrospectively the effect of estimating Edward's syndrome risk in women having multi-marker screening for Down's syndrome. The screened population comprised 15 pregnancies affected by Edward's syndrome, 15 with Down's syndrome and 5472 unaffected pregnancies. The use of all three markers to estimate Edward's syndrome risk would have led to the detection of 10-12 (67-80 per cent) cases with a false-positive rate of 0.

Placental insufficiency as a possible cause of low maternal serum human chorionic gonadotropin and low maternal serum unconjugated estriol levels in triploidy.

We report three cases in which triploidy (69,XXX) was detected by amniocentesis performed for very low maternal serum human chorionic gonadotropin levels. All three cases also had low maternal serum unconjugated estriol levels. We suggest placental insufficiency as the cause of the very low human chorionic gonadotropin because of histologic observations and because a known marker for placental insufficiency, estriol, was also very low.
