The organizational principles of nephronal segments are based on longstanding anatomical and physiological attributes that are closely linked to the homeostatic functions of the kidney. Novel molecular approaches have recently uncovered layers of deeper signatures and states in tubular cells that arise at various timepoints on the spectrum between health and disease. For example, a dedifferentiated state of proximal tubular cells with mesenchymal stemness markers is frequently seen after injury.

A new species of dragonfish Eustomias (Nominostomias) robertsi is described from the western South Pacific Ocean. The new species, the first record of a member of Eustomias (Nominostomias) Group III (sensu Gibbs et al. 1983) from the region, it is most similar to Eustomias suluensis in barbel morphology.

Objective: To estimate the burden of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) through a cross- sectional 'snapshot' of Australian Amyloidosis Network (AAN) and New Zealand (NZ) specialist amyloidosis clinics.

Design, Setting & Participants: A prospective survey was performed of seven AAN/ specialist amyloidosis clinics across Australia and NZ. All centres were invited to contribute data; participating centres provided clinical and demographic data for patients with ATTR-CA reviewed in the 2022 calendar year.

There are instances where hospitals may experience a relative shortage of oxygen, for example, future pandemics, natural disasters or wartime. We developed a modification to a domiciliary ventilator that captures oxygen normally vented during expiration into the atmosphere, delivering it to the patient. The modification significantly increases PaO in mechanically ventilated patients at their baseline FiO and baseline FiO +1, +2 and +3 L/min compared to no modification.

DNA damage is a fundamental molecular cause of genomic instability. Base excision repair (BER) is one line of defense to minimize the potential mutagenicity and/or toxicity derived from damaged nucleobase lesions. However, BER in the context of chromatin, in which eukaryotic genomic DNA is compacted through a hierarchy of DNA-histone protein interactions, is not fully understood.
