Special Forces Medics Ability to Identify Wooden Foreign Bodies by Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

Background: Detection of retained foreign bodies (FB) is a difficult task in both austere environments and emergency departments, particularly when they are radiolucent and not detectable by plain radiographs. Failure to identify and remove them can lead to increased morbidity.

Objective: To determine the accuracy of Special Forces (SF) medics in detecting wooden FBs in tissue models, using point-of-care ultrasound.

The epidemiological benefit of pyrethroid-pyrrole insecticide treated nets against malaria: an individual-based malaria transmission dynamics modelling study.

Background: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited.

Hypoalbuminemia and Nutritional Status in Children With Cancer.

Background: In children with cancer, poor nutritional status adversely affects outcomes. Hypoalbuminemia is common in pediatric oncology patients, and in some groups is associated with inferior survival rates. We sought to determine if serum albumin associates with body mass index (BMI) percentile and if combining serum albumin and BMI is associated with survival.

An effective algaecide for the targeted destruction of Karenia brevis.

We address the targeted destruction of Karenia brevis using the algaecide calcium peroxide, in tandem with the flocculation and sinking of the species. The specific aspect of the approach is the incorporation of the algaecide within the floc to rapidly kill K. brevis, thus minimizing escape of cells from the floc and reentry to the water column.

Designing Patient-Reported Measures of Fertility: Cognitive Interview Findings from Adolescents and Young Adults with Cancer.

Fertility concerns (FC) are central to the well-being of many adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors. Clinical conversations about FC and fertility preservation are suboptimal, increasing patient distress. The goal of this project was to establish content validity and comprehensibility of self-report questions on FCs for AYAs with cancer.
