Durable interest in developing a framework for the detailed structure of glassy materials has produced numerous structural descriptors that trade off between general applicability and interpretability. However, none approach the combination of simplicity and wide-ranging predictive power of the lattice-grain-defect framework for crystalline materials. Working from the hypothesis that the local atomic environments of a glassy material are constrained by enthalpy minimization to a low-dimensional manifold in atomic coordinate space, we develop a generalized distance function, the Gaussian Integral Inner Product (GIIP) distance, in connection with agglomerative clustering and diffusion maps, to parameterize that manifold.

The longevity of current joint replacements is limited by aseptic loosening, which is the primary cause of non-infectious failure for hip, knee, and ankle arthroplasty. Aseptic loosening is typically caused either by osteolysis from particulate wear, or by high shear stresses at the bone-implant interface from over-constraint. Our objective was to demonstrate feasibility of a compliant intramedullary stem that eliminates over-constraint without generating particulate wear.

Objective: Current socket-based methods of prosthetic limb attachment are responsible for many of the dominant problems reported by persons with amputation. In this work, we introduce a new paradigm for attachment via electromagnetic attraction between a bone-anchored ferromagnetic implant and an external electromagnet. Our objective was to develop a design framework for electromagnetic attachment, and to evaluate this framework in the context of transfemoral amputation.

Background: When hospital-acquired or ventilator-associated bacterial pneumonia (HABP/VABP) is caused by gram-positive and gram-negative pathogens or both (mixed infections), the adequacy of gram-negative coverage (GNC) can confound the assessment of a gram-positive agent under study. This analysis examines the influence of gram-negative infections and the adequacy of GNC on clinical efficacy and all-cause mortality in the telavancin HABP/VABP phase 3 ATTAIN trials (Assessment of Telavancin for Treatment of Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia).

Methods: This post hoc analysis evaluated 3 patient groups from ATTAIN: (1) gram-positive-only infections, (2) gram-positive-only and mixed infections-adequate GNC, and (3) gram-negative-only infections and mixed infections with inadequate GNC.

The effects of using a traction-free (plane-stress) assumption to obtain the full distortion tensor from high-resolution EBSD measurements are analyzed. Equations are derived which bound the traction-free error arising from angular misorientation of the sample surface; the error in recovered distortion is shown to be quadratic with respect to that misorientation, and the maximum 'safe' angular misorientation is shown to be 2.7 degrees.
