Purpose: In the treatment of breast cancer, neo-adjuvant chemotherapy is often used as systemic treatment followed by tumor excision. In this context, planning the operation with regard to excision margins relies on tumor size measured by MRI. The actual tumor size can be determined through pathologic evaluation.

In the Netherlands, routine screening is currently under review by the National Health Council. In any screening programme, cost-efficiency and accuracy are key.

We investigated whether preconditioning with metformin reduces preservation injury and improves hepatobiliary function in rat donor livers during ex situ normothermic machine perfusion (NMP) and after orthotopic liver transplantation.
Methods: Lewis rats were administered metformin via oral gavage, after which a donor hepatectomy was performed followed by a standardized cold storage period of 4 hours.

Methane hydrates have important industrial and climate implications, yet their formation via homogeneous nucleation under natural, moderate conditions is poorly understood. Obtaining such understanding could lead to improved control of crystallization, as well as insight into polymorph selection in general, but is hampered by limited experimental resolution. Direct molecular dynamics simulations using atomistic force fields could provide such insight, but are not feasible for moderate undercooling, due to the rare event nature of nucleation.

ECD livers; however, carry an increased risk of developing primary non-function (PNF), early allograft dysfunction (EAD) or post-transplant cholangiopathy. Ischaemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) plays an important role in the development of these complications.
