Climate change, particularly droughts and heat waves, significantly impacts global photosynthesis and forest ecosystem sustainability. To understand how trees respond to and recover from hydrological stress, we investigated the combined effects of soil moisture and atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD) on seedlings of the two major European broadleaved tree species Fagus sylvatica (FS) and Quercus robur (QR). The experiment was conducted under natural forest gap conditions, while soil water availability was strictly manipulated.
