Sleep Stage Classification Through HRV, Complexity Measures, and Heart Rate Asymmetry Using Generalized Estimating Equations Models.

This study investigates whether heart rate asymmetry (HRA) parameters offer insights into sleep stages beyond those provided by conventional heart rate variability (HRV) and complexity measures. Utilizing 31 polysomnographic recordings, we focused exclusively on electrocardiogram (ECG) data, specifically the RR interval time series, to explore heart rate dynamics associated with different sleep stages. Employing both statistical techniques and machine learning models, with the Generalized Estimating Equation model as the foundational approach, we assessed the effectiveness of HRA in identifying and differentiating sleep stages and transitions.

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy in a Patient with Eclampsia.

A case of a patient admitted to the hospital for preterm labor, who was diagnosed with and treated for posterior reversible encephalopathy (PRES) is presented in detail. During labor, the patient experienced a sudden increase in blood pressure with disturbance of consciousness and visual disturbances. Medical imaging examination revealed vasogenic edema in multiple locations in the brain.

Genetic aspects of pain and its variability in the human population.

The sensation of pain is common to both animals and human beings. Its threshold, intensity, tolerability, and characteristics are variable and depend on ethnicity, gender, stress exposure, co-existing mental disorders, such as depression or anxiety, social and economical background, as well as on genetic factors. It is estimated that about 5 and 20 percent of population suffer from acute and chronic pain, respectively, which results in the search for medical advice in healthcare facilities, and causes great expenses in health care budgets worldwide.

Exome sequencing implicates a novel heterozygous missense variant in DSTYK in autosomal dominant lower urinary tract dysfunction and mild hereditary spastic paraparesis.

Introduction: DSTYK encodes dual serine/threonine and tyrosine protein kinase. DSTYK has been associated with autosomal-dominant congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract and with autosomal-recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia type 23. Here, we report a father and his two dizygotic twin sons carrying a novel heterozygous missense variant in DSTYK, presenting with early onset lower urinary tract dysfunction due to dysfunctional voiding.

Mood Disorder Detection in Adolescents by Classification Trees, Random Forests and XGBoost in Presence of Missing Data.

We apply tree-based classification algorithms, namely the classification trees, with the use of the rpart algorithm, random forests and XGBoost methods to detect mood disorder in a group of 2508 lower secondary school students. Spinal adhesive arachnoiditis is a rare pathology involving pia mater of the spinal cord and nerve roots. It can potentially lead to disability-many patients end up wheelchair-bound due to subsequent paraparesis. It is an infrequent but possible cause of lower extremities weakness in patients with a history of spinal surgery, epidural anaesthesia, myelography or spinal tumors.

[Wernicke's encephalopathy due to hyperemesis gravidarum].

A report of 33 years old female with Wernicke's encephalopathy is presented. The disease was secondary to hyperemesis gravidarum, started from the 6th week of pregnancy. Neurological symptoms as nystagmus, headache, vertigo, disturbance of consciousness and ataxia are described, as well as difficulties in finding out the right diagnosis.
