Venous thromboembolism (VTE), consisting of both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is an extremely common condition both in the United States and worldwide. Not only is the diagnosis associated with significant morbidity and mortality for patients but it also imposes a deleterious financial burden on the US healthcare system. Diagnosis may be challenging due to variability in clinical presentation and requires a sequential workup including assessment of clinical pretest probability for VTE, D-dimer testing, and imaging.

Our study aimed to establish the basic reliability parameters of direct immunofluorescence test results in patients with oral lichen planus. We conducted an evaluation of individual antibody classes in the DIF and ELISA (BP180 antigen), comparing these results with the classical histopathological (HP) examination in a group of patients treated within the standard healthcare in our clinic. Among 66 participants with oral changes indicative of LP, only 50% received histopathological confirmation of the LP diagnosis.

Background: No studies have evaluated the day-to-day variations in urinary incontinence (UI) and fecal incontinence (FI) among adults with spina bifida (SB). We aimed to 1) describe variations in UI/FI over 30 days, 2) assess factors associated with anxiety about incontinence, and 3) correlate anxiety about incontinence and health-related quality of life (HRQOL) among adults with SB (exploratory).

Methods: Adults with SB participated in a larger 30-day smartphone-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) study of well-being and incontinence.

In the presented studies it was hypothesized that the modification of a polymeric membrane with a pore former and a hybrid nanomaterial composed of titanate nanotubes with deposited Ag nanoparticles (Ag-TNTs NPs) can protect the membrane from the microbial growth, and thus enhance its resistance to biofouling. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes were prepared by the wet phase inversion, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) were used as pore formers. The membranes were characterized in terms of morphology, topography, permeability, separation characteristics, and anti-(bio)fouling properties as well as antibacterial activity.

Objective: To characterize how often and to what extent surgeons are willing to perform retroperitoneal node sampling (RPLNS) for a unilateral renal tumor, and whether they would be encouraged to change goal number of LNs after "targeted education" (TE) METHODS: A survey with selected demographic and LN sampling practice questions was distributed to practicing members of the Society of Pediatric Urology (SPU). After answering a 7-question questionnaire, participants were provided with an abstract on the adequacy of LN yield for staging. This served as the TE and then participants were asked to answer a final question on LN sampling goals.

This case report discusses a patient diagnosed with radiation-induced cerebral vasculopathy who presented after cerebral irradiation of metastatic medulloblastoma to raise awareness of radiation-induced cerebral vasculopathy. Because radiation therapy has revolutionized treatment for children with brain cancers, radiation-induced vasculopathy is becoming ever more prominent, and its recognition is crucial to implementing early treatment strategies to improve patient outcomes. Currently, medical management is poorly defined, largely unexamined, and poorly studied.

Article Synopsis
  • Artificial intelligence in medicine usually faces challenges related to small, non-diverse patient data due to privacy concerns, but federated learning (FL) offers a solution by allowing training across different hospitals without sharing sensitive data.
  • The newly developed FL-PedBrain platform is specifically designed for pediatric brain tumors, enabling collaborative training for tumor classification and segmentation across 19 international centers, addressing the lack of diverse datasets in this area.
  • FL-PedBrain shows impressive performance metrics, maintaining almost equivalent accuracy to centralized data training while significantly improving segmentation performance by 20 to 30% at external sites, and allows for the examination of data variability in real-world situations.
