Background: The aim of this study was to verify the accuracy of the existing scoring system for the assessment of anastomotic leakage risk after anterior resection and to identify additional risk factors that were not included in this classification.

Methods: The study included 501 consecutive rectal cancer patients who underwent anterior resection without formation of protective stoma. The risk for anastomotic leakage was determined using a previously proposed scoring system based on three factors: male sex, intraoperative blood loss and level of anastomosis.

Carcinoma of the Bartholin's gland is very rare, comprises below 2% of Bartholin's gland lesions and adenoid cystic carcinoma (ADC) is one of the most uncommon variants and accounts for 10-15% of Bartholin's gland malignancies. There is no consensus on treatment of ADC of the Bartholin's gland: reported cases were treated with local excision or vulvectomy with or without lymphadenectomy followed or not by radiotherapy. The survival of patients varies significantly, so we present a case of interdisciplinary treatment of ADC resulting in 15 years' survival.

Background: Despite the findings of several randomized clinical studies, the role of gentamicin collagen implant (GCI) in rectal cancer surgery is unclear. Local pelvic application of GCI following preoperative radiotherapy and total mesorectal excision (TME) was evaluated to determine the risk of surgical site infections (SSI).

Methods: In this single-center trial, 176 patients with rectal cancer after preoperative, short-term radiotherapy (5 × 5 Gy) were randomized either to the study group in which GCI was used or in the control group without GCI.

Inducible heat shock protein (HspA1A) promotes tumor cell growth and survival. It also interacts with effector cells of the innate immune system and affects their activity. Recently, we showed that the direct contact of ovarian cancer cells, isolated from tumor specimens, with neutrophils intensified their biological functions.

Objective: To analyze the profiles of interleukin-2 (IL-2), IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), transforming growth factor-beta1 (TGF-beta1) and interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in serum and the tumor microenvironment (cyst fluid, ascites) in women with ovarian cancer or benign ovarian tumors to find the differences in their immunological status. We also estimated serum cytokines as biomarkers to distinguish preoperatively between malignant or benign character of tumors.

Design: Prospective study.

Cytokines produced by tumour and immune cells may play a significant role in a modulation of immune cells response against tumour. We investigated an ability of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with early and advanced stages of ovarian cancer and from non-cancer patients to produce various cytokines in the presence or absence of autologous ovarian cancer (OC) cells or benign ovarian tumour (BOT) cells. Activated PBMC of patients with advanced stage of cancer produced slight amount of interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) and what's more, the production of IFN-gamma was decreased in the presence of OC cells.

Introduction: Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is characterized by the presence of multiple gas-filled cysts in the intestinal wall, the submucosa and/or subserosa of the intestine. The term pneumatosis cystoides coli is synonymous with pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis when the disorder is limited to the colon. It is a secondary finding caused by a wide variety of underlying gastrointestinal or extragastrointestinal diseases but rarely occurs in the course of treatment with an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor.

In cancer, numerous cells of both innate and adaptive immune systems are activated. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils are potent effector cells of inflammation that are an important component of tumour development and progression. The important signalling proteins that are involved in neutrophil functions are extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1/2 (ERK1/2).

Pharmacogenetics achievements concerning the problem of multidrug resistance in chemotherapy started to be more frequently used in contemporary oncology to improve the treatment efficacy by individual approach to the patient. Disturbed trans-membrane transport of chemotherapeutics is one of the most important mechanisms of chemo-resistance, which seems to depend on the drug resistance genes expression (MRP1, LRP, BCRP). Between them, polymorphisms of MDR1 gene coding trans-membrane transport glicoprotein P-gp have been reported to affect the outcome of therapy, and was studied for different drugs-digoxin, fexofenadine, etoposid, vincristine, vinblastine, athracyclines and taxans.
