In analysed material of 31 patients with TBE (tick borne encephalitis) we noticed symptoms evidence the impact of TBE virus vestibular system. We showed that 21 patients had disorders like dizziness and lack of balance. And 11 patients had inaudility of conductive and receiving type what was the evidence of injury of vestibular nerve.

In the years 1963-1992, 560 patients with the diagnosis of trichinosis were treated in the Department of Parasitic Diseases and Neuroinfections, including 310 women (55.3%) and 250 men (44.7%) aged from 6 to 75 years.

The diagnosis of cat scratch disease is hampered by the fact the basic laboratory investigations fail to demonstrate characteristic changes of this disease, and the diagnosis is based usually on epidemiological history and the clinical symptom complex. The diagnosis is confirmed by the complement binging test with the antigen obtained from pathologically changed lymph nodes with values over 1.5 being pathognomonic for the disease, and by the cutaneous tests of Hanger-Rose and Mollaret.

An effect of Aminosteril-Hepa intravenous infusions or plasmapheresis on selected amino acids, ammonia, alpha-aminonitrogen serum levels and serum GGTP activity was analysed in 28 patients with liver cirrhosis with and without hepatic encephalopathy. The patients were given protein controlled dietary treatment. It was found, that plasmapheresis exerted more potent effect on previously elevated ammonia and serum alpha-aminonitrogen levels as well as serum GGTP activity than intravenous infusions of Aminosteril-Hepa.

Effects of differentiated diet with reduced proteins or diet without proteins with simultaneous use of lactulose or the preparation enriched with aliphatic amino acids with aminosteril-hepa chain on the clinical results and the ammonia, phenols, alpha-amino nitrogen, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan++ concentrations in the serum have been studied. It has been demonstrated that limitations of proteins in the diet or diet without proteins with the use of lactulose or amino acids mixtures above does not influence significantly the clinical amelioration or biochemical indices of encephalopathy or coma during the liver cirrhosis course. Homogenates of the liver and brain of patients who died due to encephalopathy and liver cirrhosis showed high contents of ammonia, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan++.

The latest observations suggest that a decreased level of serum branched-chain amino acids plays a role in the pathogenesis of liver encephalopathy. In this study we analysed the behaviour of the serum concentrations of: ammonia, phenols, alpha-amino nitrogen, tyrosine, phenylalanine and tryptophan in rats with thioacetamide-induced liver encephalopathy. The first group of rats was on protein-free diet and Aminosteril-Hepa (Fresenius FRG)--an amino acids solution with predominance of branched-chain amino acids.

Possible protective effects of cortisone in experimental post-alcohol liver damage were evaluated in relation to dose and duration of treatment. Model examinations were undertaken in 100 rabbits divided into groups of 10. No protective effect of cortisone could be demonstrated.

Ethanol 48% was applied to the experimental model in 3 examined groups of rabbits in different periods of administration and differentiated daily doses on order to investigate the influence of ethanol upon the formation of morphological and biochemical indices of the liver lesion. Biochemical investigations were carried out on 3 and 7 day of the experiment and repeated at week by intervalls. All the animals were dissected and morphological examinations of the liver were carried out.

The aim of the investigation was to estimate chosen parameters of fat balance and immunological reactivity in patients with virushepatitis and alcohol abuse (30 patients--I group), and without alcohol abuse in anamnesis (30 patients--II group). The investigations included the estimation of the presence of HBsAg in serum, the level of immunoglobulins IgG, IgA and IgM, the determination of T and B lymphocytes, the presence of organ-autoantibodies (SMA, ANA, AMA), the level of free fatty acids, triglycerides, full lipids, beta-lipoproteins and cholesterol in the blood serum. The rise in full lipids content in the blood serum, beta-lipoproteins, triglycerides, the increase of IgA level, the decrease of lymphocytes T percentage, more frequent confirmation of the presence of antimitochondrial autoantibodies were noted, especially in the group of patients with virushepatitis and alcohol abuse.

The study Hepatitis-B-virus infection was performed in the population of chronic alcoholics (224 persons). Among this population the HBs-antigenemia was proved in 42%. The immunoglobulin dysproteinemia and coexistence of autoantibodies can indicate a symptomatic Hepatitis-B-virus infection.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cortisone on the behavior of serotonin metabolism indicators in experiments carried out in rabbits. The following parameters were determined: the level of serotonin (5-hydroxy-tryptamine), (5-HT) in liver tissue and blood, the activity of monoamino-oxidase (MAO) in liver tissue and serum, and the level of 5-hydroxy-indoloacetic acid (5-HIAA) in liver tissue and in 24-hour urine of 52 rabbits. The experimental model involved acute liver injury with carbon tetrachloride--CCl4 and the effect of exogenous cortisone on the behavior of the above-mentioned indicators.

The authors analysed the clinical states and the behaviour of clinical parameters in 36 patients with chronic liver diseases. The patients were treated with Encorton or Encorton associated with Imuran. The best clinical results as well as the tendency to normalisation were observed in the group of patients who were treated with Encorton and Imuran.
