Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of in-house real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in detecting group B streptococcus (GBS) colonization compared with the standard culture method in a cohort of pregnant women.
Material And Methods: A total of 134 rectovaginal swabs were collected from 125 pregnant women, of whom 108 were known carriers or presented with preterm prelabor rupture of membranes. The swabs were placed in Standard Methods Broth (Todd-Hewitt broth supplemented with 6 μg/mL gentamicin and 15 μg/mL nalidixic acid) for culture identification of GBS.
The World Health Organization recommends vaccination of pregnant women for seasonal influenza that can also protect infants aged below 6 months. We estimated incidence and disease burden of influenza in hospitalised children below and above 6 months of age in Hong Kong during a 6 year period. Discharge diagnoses for all admissions to public Hong Kong Hospital Authority hospitals, recorded in a central computerised database (Clinical Management System, CMS), were analysed for the period April 2005 to March 2011.

Resistance-nodulation-cell division type efflux pump AdeDE was identified in acinetobacters belonging to genomic DNA group 3. Inactivation of adeE showed that it may be responsible for reduced susceptibility to amikacin, ceftazidime, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, ethidium bromide, meropenem, rifampin, and tetracycline. However, unlike what was found for other similar efflux systems, the open reading frame for the outer membrane component was not found downstream of the adeDE gene cluster.
