Six-minute walk test on a special treadmill: Primary results in healthy volunteers.

Background: The guidelines approved by the American Thoracic Society in 2002 definitely recognize the six-minute walk test (6MWT) as a useful tool for the evaluation of physical efficiency in individuals with at least moderate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart failure and intermittent dysbasia. So far, the American Thoracic Society has not approved the use of a treadmill to determine the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) because patients are unable to pace themselves on a treadmill. The purpose of our work was to prove that these problems could be avoided if physical efficiency is evaluated with the use of a modified treadmill.

The study of biomechanical properties of cancellous bone is of growing interest in many fields of medicine especially in the aspect of osteoporosis. Biomechanical properties of bone have been investigated for over 100 years. It was and still it is caused by the necessity of an evaluation of fracture risk.

[Keratectomy for a malignant melanoma of the cornea].

[Fetal hypotrophy: morphological pictures of placenta in light and electron microscopy of female residents of the Czenstochow region].

The 16 afterbirths samples obtained from pregnancies complicated by idiopathic fetal hypotrophy was examined. The criteria of hypotrophy were established: the duration of gestation above 36 weeks, the birth-weight was less than 2500 g. The control group included 8 afterbirth samples from physiological full-term pregnancies.

[The immunological and morphological aspects of chronic hepatitis caused by HBV].

The authors present in the study actual knowledge of the pathogenesis of the chronic viral hepatitis type B. Dividing of the disease into stages with description immunologic reactions connected with morphological features of the liver is used. Three stages of the disease have been reported: replication, elimination and integration of HBV in the liver.

[Difficulties in diagnosis of cytomegalovirus mononucleosis syndrome].

A case of a healthy 23-year-old woman is reported with cytomegalovirus mononucleosis as a result of infection of cytomegalovirus probably primary. The patient presented with symptoms of generalized adenopathy, migratory arthralgias and arthritis, hepatosplenomegaly, long lasting rash as well as complications of pneumonia and myocarditis. Because on histopathological examination of lymph node the Hodgkin-Reed-Sternberg-like cells were found a misdiagnosis of Hodgkin's disease was initially made.

[Selected elements of biological activity of circulating immune complexes in serum of patients with atopic diseases. I. Ability to injure guinea pig tissue by injecting atopic patient plasma].

Serum level was measured of circulating complexes (SpA binding method-CIC/SpA) in pollen and house dust mite sensitive patients during specific immunotherapy. Histopathological changes in guinea pigs skin after the intradermal injection of patients serum have been studied. Differences were demonstrated in the observed patho-morphological changes in relation to CICs/SpA serum concentrations.

[Angiosarcoma of the femur following chronic osteomyelitis].

Available literature concerning neoplastic metaplasia of the bone undergoing chronic osteomyelitis has been cited. The treatment of 62 years old patient with lasting 47 years chronic osteomyelitis of the femur after shotgun wound was presented in details. The diagnosis of angiosarcoma following chronic osteomyelitis has been established histologically.

[Carcinoid of the larynx].

The case of carcinoid of the larynx is presented. Attention is focused on the difficulties with establishing the diagnosis. The principles of treatment this kind of neoplasm are reported.

[Clinical and patho-morphological evaluation of patients dying from bronchial asthma].

Mortality from asthma within 1978-1987 was analysed retrospectively. This analysis included selected factors determining the mortality in this disease. Some conditions being able to decrease death risk in asthmatic patients were defined.

[Value of endomyocardial biopsy in the assessment of the degree of the changes in myocarditis].

Right ventricular diagnostic biopsy was performed in 25 patients (12 females and 13 males) aged 19-48 (mean 32) with suspicion of acute or subacute myocarditis for definitive diagnosis verification and to determine indications for therapy with corticosteroids or azathioprine. 3-4 specimens taken from different sites of ventricle were estimated under the light microscope according to Dallas classification distinguishing active myocarditis with or without fibrosis from borderline myocarditis with inflammatory infiltration not causing myocytes damage. Routine clinical and laboratory tests, echocardiographic examination, ECG Holter monitoring and nuclear examination to evaluate left ventricular ejection fraction were performed in all patients.

[Primary lung cancer from biopsy material of the Pathomorphology Department of the Silesian Medical Academy in Zabrze].

An analysis was carried out of material biopsied during fiberoptic bronchoscopic examination of 289 patients suspected of lung malignant disorders were present more often in males. In the group of patients older than 40 years the most often diagnosed malignant process was squamous cell carcinoma. A high correlation of clinical suspicion of malignant process and histopathological diagnosis was found.

[Cytologic prints of primary and metastatic melanomas. Preliminary report].

In 15 cases of melanoma (10 primary tumours and 5 metastatic ones) imprint examination was performed intraoperatively. In one case the material was non-diagnostic. Out of the remaining 14 cases six tumours consisted of epithelioid cells, one--spindle-shaped and seven were of mixed structure.

Polyamine levels in sarcoma-bearing rats in relation to growth and necrosis of the tumour cells.

Putrescine (PU), spermidine (SPD) and spermine (SPM) levels in blood serum of MC Sa 1828 P-bearing rats have been studied in relation to tumour weight and the histological picture. A statistically significant increase of PU and SPD was found in the course of tumour development. Decrease in the level of polyamines in the necrosis stage was also found.
