Anti-HNA testing of allo-exposed COVID-19 convalescent plasma donors including genetic human neutrophil antigen screening to prevent anti-HNA antibody-mediated transfusion-related acute lung injury.

Background: Transfusion-related acute lung injury caused by antibodies against human neutrophil antigens (HNA) is a serious but rare complication associated with blood transfusion. The presence of such antibodies is most probable in donors with a transfusion/pregnancy history. During the COVID-19 pandemic period convalescent plasma (CP) containing neutralizing antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was widely used for COVID-19 patients as a therapy in the absence of any treatment.

Biological response of adrenal carcinoma and melanoma cells to mitotane treatment.

A previous case report described an adrenal incidentaloma initially misdiagnosed as adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC), which was treated with mitotane. The final diagnosis was metastatic melanoma of unknown primary origin. However, the patient developed rapid disease progression after mitotane withdrawal, suggesting a protective role for mitotane in a non-adrenal-derived tumor.

Adropin Stimulates Proliferation and Inhibits Adrenocortical Steroidogenesis in the Human Adrenal Carcinoma (HAC15) Cell Line.

Adropin is a multifunctional peptide hormone encoded by the (energy homeostasis associated) gene. It plays a role in mechanisms related to increased adiposity, insulin resistance, as well as glucose, and lipid metabolism. The low adropin levels are strongly associated with obesity independent insulin resistance.

FGF-1 modulates pancreatic β-cell functions/metabolism: An in vitro study.

Fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF-1), also known as acidic fibroblast growth factor (aFGF), is a growth factor and signaling protein encoded by the Fgf1 gene. Previous studies have shown that FGF-1 may also participate in the regulation of glucose metabolism, both in healthy organisms and in pathological conditions such as diabetes. Because insulin the main regulator of glucose metabolism is secreted from pancreatic beta cells, we investigated whether FGF-1 directly affects the secretion of this hormone and regulates the metabolism of beta cells and isolated pancreatic islets.

Frequency of consumption of products with varying energy value by patients of a sanatorium in Ciechocinek.

The aim of the study was to assess the frequency of consumption of selected groups of foodstuffs with varying energy value by patients of the "Dom Zdrojowy" sanatorium in Ciechocinek (Poland). The survey included 100 persons, out of which 80% were obese individuals (OB), while the others were patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Products with lowered energy value, especially cottage cheese, milk, "light" yogurt, as well as tea and coffee without sugar were on average consumed rather frequently.

Mass screening program for congenital hypothyroidism in south-eastern Poland.

The success of a screening program depends in great measure on effective organization. The purpose of the screening program is the commencement of treatment of selected patients within two weeks of life. In total in our laboratory we have tested 461,479 newborns during 1985-1996.

[Dietary iodine intake in children and clinical and biochemical features of iodine deficiency in chosen districts of south-east Poland].

The study on the effects of Czarnobyl accident on thyroid gland function in children (MZ XVII program) revealed a high incidence of goiter in the population of children in district Kraków and Nowy Sacz. Other study on Tarnobrzeg population showed that the frequency of goiter in school children was 67%. The goiter prevalence, urine iodine excretion and iodine food consumption in the same populations were compared.

The effect of proteolytic enzymes on the thermostability of egg-white.

The effect of proteolytic enzyme preparations such as Proteopol PB (bacterial origin), ficin, and pancreatin on the thermostability of egg-white proteins during pasteurization was investigated. Proteolytic activities of each enzyme were measured at three different doses which were calculated by the ANSON method. The degree of white protein degradation was evaluated by the determination of amino-nitrogen.

Determination of relationship between heating value and the thermal resistance of microorganisms in canned meat.

Meat was sterilized with gamma-radiation in an aluminum foil bag and then contaminated with a determined quantity of Bacillus subtilis spores. The bag was then placed in the centre of a can filled with meat. After autoclave sterilization, the whole contents of the aluminum foil bags were examined for the quantity of survived bacteria.
