Objectives: We aimed to define and map subcompetencies required for pediatric cardiac critical care (PCCC) fellowship education and training under the auspices of the Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Society (PCICS). We used the 2022 frameworks for PCCC fellowship learning objectives by Tabbutt et al and for entrustable professional activities (EPAs) by Werho et al and integrated new subcompetencies to the EPAs. This complementary update serves to provide a foundation for standardized trainee assessment tools for PCCC.

Background: The objective of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of unfractionated heparin (UFH) compared to bivalirudin anticoagulation in pediatric ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study, that included pediatric patients <18 years of age, who were supported on ECMO between June 2017 and May 2020. Patients treated with UFH were matched 2:1 by age and type of ECMO support to the bivalirudin group.

Shortness of breath and wheezing are common presenting signs for children in the emergency department. In adolescence, it is often due to asthma or lower respiratory tract infections. We present a rare pediatric case of an adolescent with biphasic stridor and progressive exercise-induced shortness of breath who was found to have severe idiopathic subglottic stenosis.

Introduction: The treatment of (HP) tends to be empirical despite a high number of failures (over 20%). The efficacy of eradication therapies is declining, reaching in some countries 60%, which correlates inversely with the growing drug resistance of the bacteria.

Aim: Given the frequent inefficacy of the hitherto proposed treatment schemes for HP infection, an attempt was made to assess the efficacy of a therapy based on the antibiotic resistance of the cultured bacteria, and to analyse factors with possible contribution to the inefficacy of HP eradication treatment.

Addison disease is a rare endocrine disorder, which typically presents with nonspecific symptoms including weight loss, fatigue, and nausea in conjunction with hyponatremia and hyperkalemia. This case demonstrates key diagnostic clues in evaluation of an adolescent who presented with severe hyperkalemia and acute kidney injury that was resistant to insulin, glucose, and sodium polystyrene sulfonate and was found to have primary adrenal insufficiency.

The reactive aldehyde acrolein is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant and is also generated endogenously. It is a strong electrophile and reacts rapidly with nucleophiles including thiolates. This review focuses on the effects of acrolein on thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) and thioredoxin (Trx), which are major regulators of intracellular protein thiol redox balance.

Acrolein is a reactive aldehyde that is a widespread environmental pollutant and can be generated endogenously from lipid peroxidation. The thioredoxin (Trx) system in endothelial cells plays a major role in the maintenance of cellular thiol redox balance, and is critical for cell survival. Normally, cells maintain the cytosolic (Trx1) and mitochondrial (Trx2) thioredoxins largely in the reduced state.

The resistance of Helicobacter pylori to antimicrobials, known to be increasing in many countries, is an important factor compromising the efficacy of eradication therapy. Therefore, our study aimed at analysing the current susceptibility status of H. pylori in Poland.

Background: Statistically high prevalence of malignant neoplasm of digestive organs in the city of Łódź encouraged us to make an attempt to evaluate effects of adverse environmental factors and Helicobacter pyroli infection on the selected parameters of oxygen metabolism.

Materials And Methods: The study group consisted of 50 Łódź inhabitants, living and working in the center of the city, exposed to carcinogenic environmental factors. Of this number, 25 subjects were infected with Helicobacter pyroli and 25 subjects were free from the infection.

Relating to the Williams' report suggesting twofold higher incidence of diabetes mellitus in patients with the cancer of the colon, the study aiming at comparing an incidence of diabetes mellitus in patients with stomach, lung, and colon malignancies were carried out. Coexistence of the above listed neoplasms with diabetes mellitus type II was assessed in patients hospitalized at the Department of Gastroenterology and Metabolic Diseases, Institute of the Internal Diseases, Medical Academy in Warsaw within 1978-1986. Moreover, glycaemia and insulinemia curves were plotted following oral glucose load (75 g) in 16 patients with the cancer of the colon and 15 patients without malignancy.
